Boom Box for Apple¿ iPod & Shuffle with FM Radio and Presets

Amazon.com Product Review

The iHome iH30W Boom Box for iPods with FM Radio (White) lets you listen to all your favorite iPod music or radio stations anywhere, with a fresh and modern twist on a boom box. This hip boom box can run on batteries, an AC outlet or a car adaptor so you can use it wherever you go, whether you are at home, camping or on the road.

The iH30W boom box has a sharp LCD radio display with an adjustable white backlight, and has a built-in telescoping antenna to bring you clear FM-band radio reception. The radio in this unit comes with six buttons for programming in your favorite FM station presets and jumping to them quickly. The iH30W is simple to use, with easy to adjust settings, and comes with three removable inserts and a rubber pad to ensure your iPod fits properly in the iPod drawer, allowing it to be compatible with all iPod models from the iPod video to the iPod Nano. Not only is this unit designed to be sleek and portable, but it can be powered at home, in your car, or independent of plug-ins so you can take it with you anywhere. And when you are running low on battery, you can activate the power save switch to prolong your battery life by automatically shutting off after sitting unused for a period.

When the iH30W is powered by either the included AC adapter, or the included car adapter it automatically charges your iPod, but when you don't have access to an outlet it can run on eight C-cell batteries. This unit uses two, stereo 4-inch speakers and a powerful stereo amplifier to provide you with a full, rich sound regardless of the volume level. This iHome boom box has a built-in audio input jack with an included patch cord for an external MP3 player, CD player, or other audio device, and has a headphone jack that allows you to listen to your music in privacy when the situation calls for it, as well as being remote-control capable (not included). The iH30W comes in a stylish white finish that complements both you and your iPod, measures 15.07 x 5.6 x 5.57 inches (W x H x D), and is backed by a manufacturer's limited 90-day warranty.

What's in the Box

It's not a bad package all in all -- lightweight, runs off C batteries or an AC power adapter, charges your iPod when docked, and has dock adapters for all but the newest iPod nano models. It was a pleasant surprise to find that the box also included a 1/8" phone plug cable for connecting non-iPod devices and a 12V car power adapter.

My iPod mini and 5G iPod fit snugly into the dock, and the secure fit makes it much easier to use the click wheel than on competing products where the iPod can wobble a bit.

The sound quality is merely adequate and bass is nonexistent. You just can't expect very much from such a small unit. So much for the "Rich full sound" promised by the advertising copy.

I'm rating it only 2 stars because it's not worth the MSRP. I was able to pick one up for a good deal less than list price because of a sale at the local electronics superstore, but with the normal pricing it just doesn't offer a whole lot for the money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Radio Stations Reset when changing outlets, July 14, 2007

Thats my only complaint. I plugged and unplugged from same outlet in my room and it was fine, but once I went to another room I lost all my stations.
Its a nice little system though for the price though.
Big Plus unlike most systems your iPod is safely enclosed inside so if you are somewhere where it might get splashed, touched my little hands or you just don't want your ipod totally exposed its great. You do have to remove the clear plastic face to get to change your playlists though.
Another nice thing is that the little remote tucks nicely on top rear of unit under the handle.

I received this boom box as a gift a few weeks ago and am very pleased with the quality of sound from this little puppy. It is not going to blast me out of the room, but that is what a fixed stereo is for. In the meantime, the loudness is good, and the base and treble are right where I like them, and the unit feels good and solid. I very much like the options for power - it comes with an AC adapter, a car cigarette lighter adapter, and the option to use batteries. It also has a remote that seems to be the same as the one on my nightstand iHome clock/radio, so it is good to think I might have a spare. One of the things I wanted out of an iPod boom box was for it to fully enclose my iPod Video, so it would not fall out. This system does that very well. My only downside for the system is that I have to partially open the door in the front of the system to access the buttons on the iPod - which is a bit annoying when I have dirty hands. It would have been nice to have a full set of...Read more
